Crows
Crows will not eat seeds, but are seeds included when determining whether or not a crow will spawn? For example, if I have 15 plants and 15 seeds, am I safe from crows? It is not clear to me from the current description and I have not decompiled the code. I suppose the same question applies to wild seeds/crops. Zendowolf (talk) 00:13, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
:I have no proof of the game code but I know from my own experience that when you plant a long-growing crop (for example: Sweet Gem Berry) and do not put scarecrows, the crop disappears because of the crows. I hope my information is of some use and it would be nice if someone else corroborated my experience or denied it if that is the case. 😋
:┌(・。・)┘♪ Viruz PoP (talk) 00:51, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
:PS: Obviously, if the information is correct, it applies to any crop, except that I gave the example of the Sweet Gem Berry because it is a seed that takes a long time to change its growth stage. ┌(・。・)┘♪ Viruz PoP (talk) 00:56, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
::Viruz PoP is correct. The day after planting, a "crop" is no longer a seed, despite appearances. As the page says "Crows will not eat crops grown from wild seeds, seeds themselves (i.e., crops planted that day)...." 05:10, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
:::Okay, now I'm really confused. In my experience, crows show up first thing in the morning. So the only way "planted that day" makes sense is if it applies to the day just past. If I plant Parsnips on Spring 6, aren't I safe from waking up to see them eaten on Spring 7? Zendowolf (talk) 06:50, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
::::That's correct, if you plant parsnips on day 6 you will be safe from the crows, the problem comes from the next day (7) where if you have +15 seeds growing without any scarecrows then there is a chance that at least one crop will disappear. This information is also described (albeit in less detail) on the page: "Crops #1.2 - Crows".

:::::"seeds themselves (i.e., crops planted that day)" — Seeds that have been planted, but not watered, do not advance for the next stage (Watering Cans and Crops#Grow Times). Aren't these non watered seeds included in that group? Dodgy (talk) 17:27, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
::::::As far as I know, any seed at the time of planting, the next day ceases to be a seed and is classified as a growth stage 1 crop, even if it is not irrigated. And also the crows can eat those crops. But I can be wrong 😅
::::::┌(・。・)┘♪ Viruz PoP (talk) 18:26, 21 March 2022 (UTC)
::::::if I'm wrong then, only the following can apply: "The day after planting, a "crop" is no longer a seed, despite appearances. As the page says "Crows will not eat crops grown from wild seeds, seeds themselves (i.e. crops planted that day)..." 05:10, 21 Mar 2022 (UTC)"

:::::::I tried to research this using the game code, but am having problems with it running, so I tried to research in-game, and went almost an entire season with 335 unwatered parsnip seeds and no crows. My one anecdotal test would seem to indicate that a seed is a seed until it's watered, but further testing is definitely required. I will keep digging, and this is a fascinating question. margotbean (talk) 01:32, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
::::::::I would like to revisit my original question, and ask it a different way to hopefully be more clear. Suppose I start a new farm. On Spring 1, I plant Lewis's 15 Parsnip seeds and nothing else. They are obviously safe on the night of Spring 1. They are also safe on the night of Spring 2, because there are still fewer than 16 crops planted. Now suppose I plant a single Potato seed on Spring 3. What happens on the night of Spring 3? We all agree that the Potato seed won't be eaten because it was just planted, but are the Parsnips still safe? Does it totally ignore the Potato and not spawn a crow, or does it spawn a crow and just not let the crow eat the potato if it happens to select that space to attack? I think both are reasonable interpretations of, "Crows will not eat (seeds just planted)". [For purposes of this question, assume everything is watered every day. The watering question is an interesting one, but not the one I'm asking.] Zendowolf (talk) 18:09, 22 March 2022 (UTC)
:::::::::Your potato and all the parsnips are at risk of being eaten by crows on the night of Spring 3/morning of Spring 4 (for the purposes of this question, night and morning are the same thing). The parsnip seeds (and the potato) are safe on Spring 3, because crows only happen overnight. Does that help? margotbean (talk) 18:30, 22 March 2022 (UTC)

:I know it has been a while since this discussion started, but I have updated the page to clarify how it works. Firstly, all crops count towards the total, including those in the seed stage (the one exception here are forage crops which have turned into foragables, and tea saplings). As to if a crop can be eaten, this depends on what stage it is going to be after the night is over, where the 3rd stage or later can be eaten.
:So for the example, the parsnips you plant on spring 1 are safe the night of spring 1, regardless of how many are planted as they only grow to stage 2. The night of spring 2 they grow to stage 3 are now valid targets, but you need 16 crops. So in your example they are still safe. Then on spring 3 you plant a potato seed to bring you to 16 and the parsnips (but not the potato) can be taken. On the night of spring 4 the potatoes will have grown to stage 3 and are now valid targets.
:While this might seem like it is just crops that are planted before the night are safe, there are exceptions. The simplest is just not watering the crop, it doesn't matter how long it stays as a seed or the second stage, it will be safe. In addition, even with watering there are plenty which are safe for longer.
:For example, kale grows to stage 2 the first night, but only reaches stage 3 after 3 nights. So it is safe on the first and second night.
:The more extreme example is the ancient seed which if not fertilised would be safe for the first 8 nights. This is also why wild seeds are safe - They become fully mature and are replaced by foragable items instead of reaching stage 3.
:This also means hypothetically any crop that is fully mature at stage 2 would be safe, and any wild crop which had a growth stage 3 would not be safe - but currently no such crops exists. JackBlack69 (talk) 22:01, 26 March 2026 (UTC)

Pregnancy
My animals refuse to give birth, though for my knowledge all prerequisites are met I've been trying for more than an in-game-year now. I've stumbled upon a comment that says your barn-doors need to be closed for the event to happen. I'll try this out eventually - hope someone can confirm (before I get to it). Kuasiel (talk) 07:35, 6 June 2023
:Barn doors have no effect on animal births, it's just random luck. margotbean (talk) 17:17, 6 June 2023 (UTC)

Split page?
Anyone in favor of creating a new page for each different kind of animal (pet, horse, farm animal, environment animals, etc.)? This page is already quite lengthy, especially considering 1.6 additions to pets. Different kinds of animals are unrelated in terms of game mechanics anyway. Ifp (talk) 19:00, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

:I agree that those types of animals all serve different functions within the game, so that they're different topics. I also agree that we now have a sufficient number of animals to dedicate one article to each. Good idea. Giles (talk) 19:43, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

::Okay. I'll wait a bit longer to see if anyone else has anything to say. For now I'm thinking we retain this page but with a shortened summary in place of each section and create new articles at least for pet (cat/dog/turtle), horse, and barn animals (keeping them together since they share mechanics). == Turtles ==

Apparently (from InfoBoxes), turtles can give their owner Cave Jelly or Sea Jelly, but not River Jelly. Is that right? Is River Jelly an oversight? And any gifts the pet can give should be mentioned on this page. Giles (talk) 20:03, 15 May 2024 (UTC)
:Pet gifts are on this page! See Pets>Friendship>Pet Gifts. Turtles give Sea Jelly and Cave Jelly, while cats give River Jelly (their pool of items includes basically anything that can be fished from Cindersap river or the Mountain lake, if I recall correctly). == No heaters in Winter ==
I know from personal experience that animal produce is negatively affected by not having a heater in an animal building in Winter. I assume this is a function of Mood. But I'm not seeing anything that shows any negative effect of lacking heaters in Winter. Is there something that I'm not seeing, or is there just not anything there? Zendowolf (talk) 03:10, 16 June 2024 (UTC)

Pet Bowl
This page contains information on how to find and fill your pet's bowl. But I think that information would be better suited to the Pet Bowl page. The only reason it's on this page to start with is because a Pet Bowl page didn't exist on this wiki before the release of v1.6. Cheese80 (talk) 08:10, 27 September 2024 (UTC)
:Well, that's not the only reason, you still start out with a pet bowl on the farm on day 1, and cannot buy another until you make enough gold to do so, and then cannot adopt another pet until at least Fall of year 1 (max friendship with first pet, give or take a few days).
:But yes, the wiki is now quite messy on the subject of pet bowls, with information existing under Animals#Additional Pets, Animals#Friendship, and Pet Bowl. I am open to specific suggestions as to how to un-mess-ify this! I think we have already the suggestion to move everything to the Pet Bowl page, but I don't like that idea so much, since that page currently focuses on additional pet bowls rather than the first pet bowl. So, let's keep working at it. Suggestions? margotbean (talk) 18:30, 27 September 2024 (UTC)

Product quality distribution
Is my math correct that at max friendship/mood you have a 50/50 chance of iridium, then a 50/50 chance of gold, then guaranteed silver? So .5 iridium,.25 gold,.25 silver?

I think most readers are interested in maximum potentials, might be good to include. Mood is very easy to keep maxed permanently mid-endgame, and easy to keep at max most days early game. A table with distribution by friendship level assuming max mood would be cool. The random examples seem weird to me. == New things on switch 1.6 ==

So I can't remember them all right now, but I'll add stuff when I do.

1: Butterflies can glow, all of them were some shade of light blue and I've only seen it in the winter. It was a pretty small light but still noticeable, and it definitely moved with the butterfly
2: Possums/opossums(what's the difference?) are a thing, I was heading back to the farm through the community center when I ran past one. It jumped up then ran into the bush behind it
3: Despite having gone through a full year not a single one of my scarecrows have encountered a crow, and I know for a fact I've had more then 15 crops on several occasions

Just telling you if you didn't know, sorry if I was rude anywhere. Amellia (talk) 00:17, 4 July 2025 (UTC)

Cat gifts
Cats can't gift river jelly until you have caught at least 1 fish, Can i insert this information? also why is the river jelly in a note under the cat's table and not in the table? Klytos (talk) 14:48, 27 January 2026 (UTC)
:If you have a code reference you can update the page. Please remember to sign your posts with 4 tildes, as it says at the top of the page. Thanks, margotbean (talk) 21:40, 26 January 2026 (UTC)
::Hello again! When petting a cat this is the option that would generate a river jelly:
::<syntaxhighlight lang="c#">
"Id": "ForestFish",
"ItemId": "LOCATION_FISH Forest 67 52 1",
</syntaxhighlight>
::we can see the exact coordinate (67 52) and fishing level (1). This is the cindersap forest river. So the game tries to catch a fish there, but remember that when you're fishing for the first time you will always get a fish with the minigame and apparently when picking a fish the game follows this rule.

::So to test this theory I created a new file and added 20 cats, petting them every day for a while, i ended up getting hundreds of fish but no river jelly. To make sure that this wasn't happening just because the jelly is rare i did a calculation: I picked a random fish that i'd gotten, the Sunfish. I got 35 sunfish, and putting the scenario in which the game catches the fish in a fishing calculator (Last time i put a link the wiki blocked it) the chance to catch a Sunfish was 22.15% and the chance to catch a River Jelly was 3.65%. To estimate how many River Jelly should be expected, I multiplied the number of Sunfish caught (35) by the ratio of the River Jelly chance relative to the Sunfish chance (3.65 ÷ 22.15 ≈ 0.165), which results in an expected value of approximately 5.77 River Jelly, and i got none.

::I hope my my theory and practical experiment are enough to convince you but if the aren't got to Salmence's "I Got Perfection in Stardew Valley with NO ENERGY" video at 51:00 and watch till 51:25 where he explains this saying that BlaDe pointed this out(He says cave jelly one time but it was just a mispronounce).

::If you're still reading this, thank you very much for your time, i know it was quite a long message Klytos (talk) 14:48, 27 January 2026 (UTC).
