Books are used to give players powers. You can always check which one you have in the section Special Items & Powers of the player tab.

Monster Compendium	Dropped from monsters in every situation	Monsters have a small chance to drop double loot.
Dwarvish Safety Manual	Bought from the Dwarf for data-sort-value="4000">4,000g (Can be bought multiple times)	Bombs deal 25% less damage to you.
Jack Be Nimble, Jack Be Thick	Bought from the Bookseller for data-sort-value="20000">20,000g	Defense (+1)
Way Of The Wind pt.1	Bought from the Bookseller for --	increases base run speed
